In a significant move, Kane Williamson, the renowned New Zealand cricketer, has been appointed as a strategic advisor for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in preparation for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of LSG, announced this exciting news on social media, stating, "Kane has been part of the Super Giants family, and we are thrilled to welcome him in his new role. His leadership qualities, strategic acumen, and profound understanding of cricket will be invaluable to our team."
Williamson has previously been involved with the Super Giants franchise, particularly with their Durban team in the SA20 league. The 35-year-old last represented New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final held in March this year.
Williamson to Miss Upcoming T20 Series
Although he remains active in international cricket, Williamson has chosen to take a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket. He will not participate in the T20I series against England but is anticipated to return for the One Day Internationals (ODIs). The first ODI is set to take place in his hometown of Tauranga on October 26.
Williamson, a seasoned IPL player, has had limited on-field appearances over the past three seasons. In IPL 2023, he was acquired by the Gujarat Titans but suffered a knee injury during his first match, preventing him from continuing in the tournament. He remained with the Titans for IPL 2024, playing only two matches and scoring 27 runs in 27 balls. In 2025, he went unsold in the mega auction. His most recent performance was in The Hundred tournament in England, where he scored 204 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 129.93 for the London Spirit, who finished seventh in the league.
Despite his reduced playing time, Williamson is still a respected figure in the cricketing world, having led New Zealand to the 2019 ODI World Cup final and winning the inaugural World Test Championship two years later. He will now join LSG, which is captained by Rishabh Pant and coached by Justin Langer. The Super Giants faced challenges last season, finishing in seventh place, mirroring their performance in IPL 2024.
